Uganda pairs two of East Africa's most physical, most rewarding experiences into a single trip: gorilla trekking through Bwindi's ancient rainforest, and a multi-day summit hike through the Albertine Rift's volcanic highlands. This is deliberately the most demanding itinerary we run — not a safari you watch from a vehicle seat, but one you earn on foot, in mud, uphill, with a pack on your back.
This trip is guided end-to-end by our own crew, who carry more of the load than most guests expect and somehow still have dinner ready and the fire lit by the time you stagger into camp. There's no subcontracted local operator picking up the trekking half of the trip — the same team that meets you in Entebbe walks every ridgeline with you.
Bwindi is home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and the permit-controlled trek to spend a guarded hour with a habituated family is the kind of encounter that reorders your sense of scale — an animal that shares 98% of your DNA, close enough to hear it breathe, entirely unbothered by your presence because generations of rangers have done the patient work of habituation before you arrived.
The second half trades rainforest for volcanic highland: a full-day ascent through cloud forest to a ridgeline in the Virunga foothills, with views across the Albertine Rift that make the previous day's mud and effort feel like the cheapest price you could have paid for them.

Day By Day
Route: Entebbe → Bwindi Impenetrable Forest → Mgahinga Volcanoes → Entebbe
Day 1 | Arrive Entebbe
Land in Entebbe and transfer to a lakeside lodge on the shores of Lake Victoria, a gentle first night before the physical demands of the week ahead. Your guiding crew runs a full gear check that evening — boots, layers, rain protection — and briefs the group on what Bwindi's terrain will actually feel like underfoot, since no amount of reading quite prepares you for it.
Day 2 | Drive to Bwindi
A long, scenic drive through Uganda's terraced highlands — tea plantations stepping down hillsides, roadside markets, banana groves giving way gradually to thicker forest — toward Bwindi Impenetrable Forest itself. The name is not marketing: this is genuinely dense, ancient rainforest, and it's home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas.
Day 3 | Gorilla Trekking Day
The day this whole trip is built around. Trek Bwindi's steep, frequently misted ridgelines with a permitted ranger guide, following trackers who've been following a specific habituated family since dawn. The trek itself can run anywhere from one to several hours depending on where the group has moved overnight — then, on arrival, a strictly guarded single hour in the family's presence, close enough to watch an infant gorilla wrestle its siblings while an adult male watches on, entirely unbothered by eight quiet, awestruck humans.
Day 4 | Onward to Mgahinga
Drive to the Virunga foothills at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, gateway to the volcanic highlands that dominate the horizon for the rest of the trip. This is a lighter day deliberately — legs recovering from yesterday's trek, gear repacked for tomorrow's summit attempt.
Day 5 | Summit Trek
A full-day ascent through cloud forest — the vegetation changing visibly with altitude, mist rolling through in waves — to a volcanic ridgeline in the Mgahinga highlands. The final push is steep and the air noticeably thinner, but the payoff at the top is sweeping, uninterrupted views across the Albertine Rift, the kind of vista that makes the descent afterward feel almost like an afterthought.
Day 6 | Depart Entebbe
The long drive back to Entebbe, with time to rest sore legs before the flight home. Most guests spend at least part of this drive already planning which mountain they're coming back for.
